Before I explain, you need to know that:
In a Theater, a movie plays at 24 frames per second.
On a NTSC system, a movie plays at 30 frames per second.
On a PAL system, a movie plays at 25 frames per second.
How to transfer the movie to a NTSC system:
Play the Theater version at normal speed. Take 1 second - that is 24 frames -. Duplicate 6 frames among these 24 frames, you get the 30 frames you need for 1 second of video. It's so fast that the visual difference will be un-noticed. While you're at it, capture 1 second of sound and you get the 1 second of sound you need to match the 30 frames - 1 second of NTSC video - of your NTSC version.
Summary: Play at normal speed but duplicate 1 frame every 4 frames.
How to transfer the movie to a PAL system:
It's slightly tricky! Play the Theater version slightly speeded up at 25 frames per second instead of 24. The image and sound are both speeded up. You get the 25 frames you need for 1 second of video. The movie plays 4% faster (*) but the visual difference is un-noticed. However, the pitch of the sound and voices is slightly higher than normal. And that would be noticed. So the pitch of the soundtrack is lowered to get back to normal.
Summary: Play at higher speed but lower the pitch of the soundtrack.
(*) 112 minutes played at 4% faster than normal speed will play in 107 minutes only.
One original trailer.
One feature/episode commentary by director Robert Wise, screenwriter Nelson Gidding, Julie Harris, Claire Bloom, Richard Johnson, Russ Tamblyn.
Stills and poster gallery.
Remark: The commentary was built up out of previous interviews. It was not recorded especially for the DVD release. Furthermore, it was made of separate interviews. But the result is not bad at all and the comments are pleasant to hear.
The chapters are the same on all the editions that I know.

Here is the text that can be found on the back cover
"It was an evil house from the beginning, a house that was born bad." The place is the 90-year-old mansion called Hill House. No one lives there. Or so it seems. But please do come in. Because even if you don't believe in ghosts, there's no denying the terror of "The haunting."
Robert Wise returned to psychological horror for this much admired, first adaptation of Shirley Jackson's "The haunting of Hill house." Four people come to the house to study its supernatural phenomena. Or has the house drawn at least one of them to it? The answer will unnerve you in this elegantly sinister scare movie. It's good fun. (Pauline Kael, "5001 nights at the movies").

Remark:
There is an incredibly ugly moiré effect on the original cover. I'm sure it's an original disc and not a counterfeit because it has a Warner hologram sticker. And the picture disc looks absolutely normal, when I compare with the other editions. This moiré effect makes the scan really bad. I didn't apply any filter on purpose because it would blur the image. I guess the local studio didn't have the original artwork and re-scanned it from somewhere. Or the print shop applied an incorrect setting somewhere. Anyway the result is really bad.

You might believe that the cover is an especially new designed cover. I'm sorry but... no, this new cover was made out of the 1963 MGM campaign promo A3 booklet. The original drawing was re-used, without the text.
See below the cover of the original MGM booklet plus a blue-tinted version of a close-up of the drawing...
To be comprehensive, I also have to add that the same drawing was used in 1963 in France for the "blue" poster (two posters were issued in France: a large "blue" one with that drawing and a smaller "red" one with another artwork).
Although at least two trailers in English were produced, the same version is available on all the DVDs (and on the LaserDisc and VHS as well).
This trailer is interesting for two main reasons:
The first reason is that it contains some scenes that are not in the final cut of the movie. Of course, Dr. Markway's narration is not (and would not make sense in the movie itself). But have you noticed the scene when Theo is alone in her bedroom, scared to death and agitated like a cat expecting something? The very end of this scene is used in the movie, just before Eleanor joins Theo in her bedroom. But this scene is much much longer in the trailer... Watch it again and you'll see for yourself.
The second reason is that it contains some dialogs and spoken texts that are not in the final cut of the movie.
Dr. Markway starts with
My name's Markway. Dr. Markway. A scientist interested in the supernatural. The "un-natural", if you like. I came to Hill House to find the key to another world. Assisting me in this exploration of the unknown was Eleanor - Nell - who could look back into the past. And Theo - something of a witch - who could see into the future. This is Luke, who didn't believe in anything until evil, patient, waiting ... made him change his mind.
Then a voice over continues
How many of us take seriously the things we cannot or do not want to understand, simply because we are afraid?
"The Haunting" was produced and directed by Robert Wise, brilliant producer of "West side story". The stars consist of a cross section of top talent in the world of entertainment. Julie Harris. Claire Bloom. Richard Johnson. Russ Tamblyn.
Then Dr. Markway concludes with
What does it take to convince you that the dead do not always rest in peace? That some houses, like Hill House, are born bad?
A voice over starts with
Tonight the dead will walk and you - unbeliever -, will scream unheard.
Then Julie Harris interrupts with
Stop it!
And the voice over continues with
"The Haunting"
What do we really know of that other world of hauntings, of apparitions in the night, of the sinister powers of darkness?
Julie Harris interrupts with
Arghhhh!
The voice over continues with
"The Haunting" was produced and directed by Robert Wise the brilliant producer of "West Side Story" and stars Julie Harris, Claire Bloom, Richard Johnson, Russ Tamblyn.
Julie Harris interrupts with
Go away!
Finally the voice over concludes with
You cannot deny terror.
You cannot look the other way.
You have to face the supernatural.
Face the chilling mysteries of forces you cannot understand or control when, "The Haunting", holds you in its spell.

In theory, the zone-based protection system is used to control the worldwide availability of a movie. It really makes sense when a movie has just been released: when a movie is released in the USA on DVD, it might still be in the cinemas across Europe. The availability of the DVD in Europe at the same time might compromise the success in the cinemas.
For a movie that was released a long time ago, it's quite different. The issue is not the worldwide availability; it's just a matter of taxes. The DVDs are not available at the same price everywhere in the world. So the zone-based protection system can be used to prevent "cheaper" editions from abroad to be imported and sold locally, cheaper than the local edition.
For "The haunting", it's funny to realise that the discs are mostly playable in different zones, although the sleeve leads us to believe that the zone-based protection system is strictly enforced.
You will find below a table that sums up everything.
This is based on my own personal collection of DVD editions. This information is provided "as is", without any guarantee of any kind. I cannot promise you that newer pressings will have the same properties and protections.
How to interpret the table?
On a row, you've got the list of the various editions that you can play in that zone.
In a column, you've got the list of zones where you can play this edition.

The lucky ones are the people with a DVD player from zone 2 because they can play all the various editions of the movie.
New details and pictures will be added as soon as I receive other editions...
And I would sure like to know what was released in Portugal, Norway, Sweden, Finland, South America, Korea, Taiwan and East Europe.
If you have heard of any other local release, I would of course be very interested to hear about it.
If you have a spare copy of another local edition, sealed, or at least in mint condition... I'd sure like to buy it or maybe you would like a european edition in exchange?

"An evil old house, the kind some people cal haunted, is like an undiscovered country waiting to be explored. Hill House has stood for 90 years and might stand for 90 more. Silence lay steadily against the wood and stone of Hill House and whatever walked there, walked alone." Thus begins one of the most chilling, most frightening, truly unforgettable horror films ever.
Dr. Markway is an anthropologist with a special interest in psychic phenomena who wants to try a true exercise in terror. Intrigued by the legend of Hill House, he invites two women, psychic researchers, to join him in his adventure. Mrs. Sannerson, who has inherited the old mansion, is suspicious of Dr. Mayway's intentions and insists that her young nephew Luke go along with the group. Luke is skeptic about the supernatural, until he enters Dr. Marway's eerie world.
The classic forerunner of such films as 'Poltergeist' and 'The shining', 'The haunting' is a hair-raising screen rendition of Shirley Jackson's riveting gothic novel, 'The haunting of Hill House'. Like Luke, you may not believe in ghosts, but you cannot deny the terror of 'The haunting'!

Silence lay steadily against the wood and stone of Hill House and whatever walked there, walked alone." Thus begins one of the most chilling, most frightening, truly unforgettable horror films ever to be put on celluloid.
The classic forerunner of such films as 'Poltergeist' and 'The shining', 'The haunting' is a hair-raising screen rendition of Shirley Jackson's riveting gothic novel, 'The haunting of Hill House'. Its premise is simple: Dr. Markway, a trained anthropologist with a special interest in psychic research, wants to try want he hopes will be a true exercise in terror. He's heard about the reputation of Hill House, which claimed the lives of several of its young inhabitants, and invites two carefully selected assistants to join him. The one thing they have in common is experiences with the supernatural. Mrs Sannerson, who has inherited Hill House, insists that her young nephew, Luke (Tamblyn), go along with the group so that nothing improper can go on between the unmarried women and the handsome Dr. Markway. The young nephew is a skeptic until he enters the eerie world of Hill House. Like him, you may not believe in ghosts, but you cannot deny the terror of 'The haunting'!

Numerous editions were probably released in VHS over the years but I don't own many of them. I must confess VHS editions have got very low or no interest at all these days.

Remark:
This edition contains 3 two-sided collector's cards.
The main side is a picture, the other side is a printed text.
Card Haunting facts:
† Robert Wise was the director of a very diverse set of movies, amongst them several of the keystones of intelligent horror & science fiction film-making - 'The Andromeda Strain', 'Audrey Rose', 'The Day The Earth Stood Still' and the first incarnation on the large screen of the Star Trek story. He also directed grandma's favourite movie - The Sound Of Music' and 'West Side Story'.
† Film-maker, author, doctor, and one man renaissance, Michael Crichton drew upon his experience on set when Wise filmed his novel 'The Andromeda Strain', when making his debut as a film director with 'Westworld', taking many tips from the experienced director.
† Russ Tamblyn plays the sceptic nephew in the film, though he later threw off this scepticism of the supernatural in his role as the doctor in David Lynch's 'Twin Peaks'.
† The extraordinary effects were created with the revolutionary use of infrared film stock, which had to be specially flown over from Belgium.
† The house used in the film can be found just outside Stratford-Upon-Avon
† Lois Maxwell plays the wife of Dr. Markway. She is famous for her role as the luckless suitor of James Bond, the long suffering Miss Moneypenny.
† Claire Bloom was discovered by Charlie Chaplin for his masterpiece Limelight, in 1952.
† In true Scooby Doo fashion, the technicians working on the film experienced many spooky creaking sounds and doors suddenly closing... whilst they were working to recreate spooky creaking sounds and doors suddenly closing... Shaggy! Daphne!
Card The haunted house:
A staple of the horror novel, the horror film and indeed the flimsy premise for the long running 'Scooby Doo' programme, where every week the Mystery Machine would pull up outside an old mansion / castle / funfair (delete as appropriate), is that of the haunted house.
The prerequisite for a haunted house story on film is a starring role for the house itself, which is preferably built in the Gothic or Edwardian style. The architecture of the 17th century is preferred, but anything up until Victorian time may be considered suitable. Furnishings? Brocade, velvet and oak floors would pass, set off with a few essential accessories: a huge fireplace, sets of mediaeval armour and wrought candelabras. Horror film-makers and set designers go to great lengths to procure exactly the right building for the film, and The Haunting' was no different as Wise and Boulton scoured England & Wales for weeks to find a manor house that could pass for the Hill House, a New England mansion where three mysterious deaths have occurred. The local legend about the Hill House is that evil surrounds it, having being 'born bad'. As the malevolent spirit isn't seen in the film, much of the dramatic tension had to come from the set itself, further emphasising the need for a ghostly presence from the house itself.
Interestingly the use of the building as a central character has continued up until the present day as witnessed by the star turn from the Fox building in 'Die Hard' and the forthcoming film based on Philip Kerr's novel 'Gridiron', about a clever skyscraper.
